GATE-LAB, an experimental platform
GATE-LAB was established in 2015 within the GATE institute, thanks to the support of CNRS, University Lyon 1, ENS de Lyon and the CORTEX Laboratory of Excellence. It has moved in 2024 to the Berges du Rhône Campus of University Lumière Lyon 2 (ERATO building). The head of GATE-LAB is Marie Claire Villeval, Research Professor at CNRS. The lab manager in charge of programming the experimental protocols is Quentin Thevenet, CNRS engineer, assisted by Chaya Sénichault, CNRS engineer.
GATE-LAB provides advanced facilities for researchers of GATE who conduct experiments on decision-making. These experiments allow researchers to develop various research programs in behavioral economics. GATE-LAB offers a behavioral laboratory, an eye-tracking laboratory, a physiological laboratory and a mobile laboratory for conducting experiments in the field.
The experiments are conducted with volunteers who must pre-register online and sign a consent form. Participants must be at least 18 year old.
Once registered, subjects may receive emails inviting them to participate in a given experiment. The randomized invitation process is managed through the HRoot software (Hamburg Registration and Organization Online Tool) (Bock, Nicklich, Baetge 2013).
Participation does not expose subjects to particular physical risks. Deception by the experimenters is proscribed. Subjects are gratified for their participation. A charter of ethics guarantees the respect of good practice. All protocols receive the approval from an IRB or from the GATE-LAB Ethics Review Board.
GATE-LAB is an institutional member of the French Association of Experimental Economics (ASFEE).
Head of GATE-LAB: Marie Claire Villeval, Research Professor, CNRS. Past-President of the Economic Science Association. Founder of the French Association of Experimental Economics (ASFEE). Department Editor at Management Science, Honorary Editor of the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Advisory Editor of Experimental Economics, member of the board of the Journal of the Economic Science Association.
Lab manager: Quentin Thevenet, CNRS engineer
Participate in experiments
Registration to participate in experiments
Participants in the experimental sessions are volunteers pre-registered on our website: experience.gate.cnrs.fr. We use the software
H-Root (Hamburg online registration and organization tool) (Bock, Nicklich, Baetge, 2013) to manage the invitations to the experimental
sessions. Once registered, participants can receive e-mails inviting them to participate in an experiment. HRoot ensures a random invitation
process based on a pre-filtering performed according to specific needs of the experiment.
Ethics
A charter of ethics ensures compliance with good practice in the conduct of experiments. In particular, deception is forbidden in
experimental protocols. All protocols receive the approval from an IRB or from the GATE-LAB Ethics Review Board.
Research fields
GATE-LAB is used for research on decision-making, individual and social preferences, information and communication, cooperation, incentives, dishonesty and ethics, institutional mechanisms and market design, social norms, neuroeconomics, learning, AI, …
Research programs are supported by grants from the National Research Agency (ANR), the CORTEX laboratory of excellence, Research Collaboration Program between CNRS and University of Chicago, MITI-CNRS,…
